Welcome to your first blended online class!
You are probably asking your self: “What is a blended online class?" Typically you come to school, the teacher introduces the topic, she/he asks some questions, you read some pages in your text book and answer a couple exercises. You talk and discuss with your classmates about your assignments, projects and doubts. A blended online class differs in that I will not be lecturing you about the subject, you will not be reading or working in your textbook. You will however, read several articles online, watch videos and turn in your assignments via the internet. Our communication will take place online. It will be your responsibility to read and follow the instructions I have laid out for you on this website. You will be learning the same things as you would in a regular classroom. Since this is the first time you experience something like this, you will be working at school in the computer lab. The schedule is set up for you to go 3 times a week for a period of 40 minutes to the computer lab. We will be meeting face-to-face on a couple occasions to discuss what you have done and to present your projects to the class, but you will mostly be working on your own online. Blended online class refers to a combination of online and face-to-face interactions.
This is our second unit: Matter. The purpose of this course is for you to be able to differentiate between what is and what is not matter, to understand its properties and the changes that occur in matter. You will be doing this through experimentation. Humans have always been curious about the world they live in. And it is thanks to that curiosity that many discoveries and inventions have been made. Scientists have been able to answer questions which our ancestors thought to be impossible or mysteries. So, instead of only reading about matter, you will become a scientist yourself. You will research, examine, observe and analyse to build on your own understanding of the subject.
On the scroll down menu over home, I have written everything you need to know on how the course is designed, what my expectations are, what you need in order to successfully complete the course and different policies. Please take a moment and read them carefully. On the blog page you may submit any questions you may have about the course or if you would like me to further explain something. We will be discussing and going over these questions the following day in class. It is better if everything is clear right from the start so there are no bumps on the way.
The major goal of this course is for you to become critical thinkers and participate in educational experiences. What do I mean by this? I want you to not just believe everything you read, but to have an opportunity to test, experiment and see for yourself.
