The first thing I want you to do is to create a folder in your Google Drive and name it Matter plus your name. It should look something like this: Matter Annie. It is important to keep your Drive organized, it makes it easier for you if you keep track of your assignments. Then, create a document with in your matter folder. Name it: Module 1. On this document you will be typing and posting all four assignments. Make sure you share the folder with me:
[email protected]
In order to distinguish between assignments, I would like you to put a title in bold letters and underlined before typing in each assignment. This is how all your assignments on Google Drive should be done. It should look something like this:
Each day you will be working on a different entry. For entry #4 you will have 3 days to complete it. You may begin working on your first assignment. Read instructions carefully and don´t forget to proof read your paragraphs when you finish to catch any grammar or spelling mistakes.
I will be reading your entries and making comments directly on your document using the comments feature in google drive. Please make sure to go back and check your entries for feedback and grade.
1. Entry #1: Write a paragraph answering the following questions. There is no wrong or right answer to these questions. It it just your opinion.
- How do you think scientists choose the experiments they work on?
- How long do they work on experimenting on the same topic?
- What are the basic things scientists need to perform an experiment?
- Are there any specific steps they need to follow?
2. Entry #2: Log in to BrainPOP and watch the video “Scientific Method“. When the video is over click on “FYI: Read More" and read the article. You may take notes while you watch the video. In the end, write a paragraph explaining what you understand about the Scientific Method and how it works in your own words.
3. Entry # 3: There are several steps to follow for this entry. Here is the order you need to follow:
a) Read the article “Science Projects"
b) Go to Popplet and watch the tutorial
a) Read the article “Science Projects"
b) Go to Popplet and watch the tutorial
c) Sign up for an account
d) Create a mind-map explaining the 6 steps of the scientific method. Copy-paste is not allowed! The goal is for you to explain using your own
words what you understand.
e) Include a link to your popplet on your Google doc. Feel free to add
images or videos to your popplet in order to best explain or provide
examples.
4. Experiment: Now this is the moment when you actually become a scientist! You will be assigned a partner in class. You and your fellow scientist will be performing an experiment following the steps of the scientific method. Together you will choose a topic and question for your experiment. The topics from which you may choose from are found at the end of this explanation. Once you have chosen your topic, one of you must make a copy of the document I have shared with you on google drive. The document is called Experiment. Move the document into your Matter folder. Share the document so that you both have it and can work on it. Fill out the document and don ´t forget to share it with me again.
The last step in the scientific method is communication. Even if scientists were not able to prove their hypothesis, they must share their experiments with other scientists to receive feedback. Other Scientists may contribute and help redefine the experiments. Since you are a scientist, you and your partner will be creating a google presentation of your experiment. Each slide should represent a step in the scientific method. When everyone has finished, you will be presenting to the class. You may use the school ipads to take pictures or video while you perform your experiments.
These are the topics you may choose from:
a) What kind of paper best absorbs liquids?
b) Why do people get tickles?
c) Why do some objects float and others don ´t?
d) Why do you get soaked when you shake a soda can and then open it?
e) Why do people smile?
f) Why do you taste sweet and salty food in different parts of your mouth?
Now that you have chosen your topic, you must also design your experiment. Make a list of all the materials you need to bring to class for you to try and prove your hypothesis.
After finishing your presentations, each one of you will include the link to your presentation on your google document with the rest of the entries. You will write a final paragraph explaining and describing your own personal experience with following the scientific method. Did you see any benefits or constraints in working in this order when performing an experiment? Would you suggest the scientific method should include any other step or a different order?
